Summary: When the Amity Foundation brought together peoples of different nationalities with differing political, religious and ideological view points, for a consultation on "Christianity and Modernization", it brought to the fore a debate between faith and values and the rapid materializing transformation modernization brings. The theme of the consultation is particularly timely to the Chinese context. Amidst the rapid changes that come with modernization in China, people are searching for a new spiritual path which can provide human values and a sense of meaning and purpose. The search has led many Chinese intellectuals to a positive appreciation of Christian values. The papers which are included in this book were presented by some of the Chinese participants at the consultation. Written by teachers and academic researchers from social science academies and universities in Beijing, as well as a professor from Nanjing Union Theological Seminary, they reflect the variety of ways in which Christianity is being interpreted in China.
