520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. "The Rev. Dr. Donald McNaughton Stuart (1819-1894) was a much-loved Presbyterian minister known for his compassion and educational vision. He was the first minister of Knox Church, Dunedin and an active member of the Presbyterian Synod of Otago and Southland, where his activities reflected his interests in education and church expansion. He was especially involved with the development of secondary and university education. He was chairman of the Otago Boys' and Girls' High Schools Board from 1878 to 1894 and was a key figure in the movement to establish the University of Otago. Among the first appointed members to the Otago university council, he was elected Vice-Chancellor in 1871, and then chancellor in 1879. He was awarded an honorary doctorate of divinity from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland in 1872. D.M. Stuart's public life was a marked success but his private life was marred by tragedies that reveal the high price the whole Stuart family paid for his public life and works"--Publisher information.
